The plate depicts a landscape of the Pearl River in Canton. The center of the scene presents the famous Dutch Folly fort. It is China’s largest international port in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries where it was used as warehouses for Chinese products in the process of being exported to the West. Around the fort can be seen several boats probably transporting cargoes of teas and porcelain coming from inland China. In 1773, Captain Carl Gustav Ekeberg published his recollections of several trips to Canton in the service of the Swedish East India Company. In his book, Dutch Folly Fort was illustrated with several engravings based on his own drawings. Those images traveled far and wide. A set of porcelain decorated with a scene of the Dutch Folly Fort made it to the home of the US 4th President, James Madison.
